This is what we use on our LJ8100's (we don't have many left, but page
counting does work...):
:ifhp=model=hp8100,config=/s/lprng-3.8/etc/ifhp.conf-3.5.10, \
pagecount_poll_start=1, pagecount_poll_end=2
Try running
ifhp -Tdev=dev=lwtest.printers.math.umd.edu%9100,model=hp8100,trace
and see what it comes back with.
