My experience too.  We have a lot of complaints about HP's grinding to a
very slow speed, and frequent crashes. 8150 in particular. 
I try to keep both the printer and the jetdirect firmware up-to-date,
but so far it hasn't been much improvement.

The printer firmware can be simply pushed to the printer , eg.

  socket -q printer.my.domain 9100 <  fw7_109.rfu

I haven't found a unix way to push jetdirect fw, though...
