Minutes for UA MOPS meeting, May 23, 2006

In attendance:
Tim Axelrod, Kobus Barnard, Jeffrey Kantor, Bongki Moon, Scott Morris,
   Francesco Pierfederici, Praveen Rao

Main points:

o We discussed getting access PS data and code bases, as the LSST-PS
agreement has been reached. Francesco is expected to help us on this one
by understanding the PS solar system simulation and data from it.

o One of the main items for the next week will be to help Francesco catch
up with what has been done so far (and what is in the SPIE paper).

o Francesco briefly described the Trojan search project at Europe, whose
goal is to identify/detect moving objects by directly working on
image files. Francesco will send us references.

o We discussed possible license to the JPL orbit fitting package and
the need of benchmarking for performance evaluation, in comparison with
open source codes such as OrFit. Tim said that preference should be given
to open source, and Kobus pointed out the OrBit Scott has been using
is written in Fortan and buggy. Anyhow, we agreed that we should decide
     eariler than later.

o Jeff said that PS-MOPS might adopt Oracle database for its spatio-temporal
features to maintain moving object databases. We don't have to go with
their decision on the choice of a database system, but we certainly don't
want to re-invent everything. We asked Francesco to provide us with
     more information from PS.

o Praveen reported that the SPIE poster was ready.

o Scott briefly discussed the progress of his simulation.

o Tim pointed us to the successor of the MACHO project (SEKS?) as a good
     source of data sets.
