I copied those mode lines into both the workstation definition in
/etc/dhcpd.conf and into 
/etc/ltsp.conf and into 

But I still get the same results:  

        Fatal server error:  
        No valid modes found.  

So I added it to:  
/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf 
as well and this time, the screen blanked out in an attempt to start the
X-server.  When it bombed out, it left me with this error message:  

        Fatal server error: 
        Cannot open mouse (No such file or directory) 

So I mucked around with the lts.conf file parameters for the mouse.  It
finally got past that one and I now have a grey screen, with an X, which 
the moment I touch the mouse, zooms straight to the top of the screen and 
stays there, running back and forth across the top edge.  I've seen this 
issue before, but can't remember where, or what I actually did about it.  

Any clues, anyone?

You don't need to hack a XF86Config file.  the file is generated
automatically for you, based on built-in values and values that
you can place in the lts.conf file.  If you are having a problem,
take a look at:

   http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/modelines.html
