Not according to what i know, coffee?, or what the faq states
(http://www1.nl.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ-12.html#ss12.3)
Since Squid 2.3, the default is to use internal DNS lookup code which is
implemented with the main squid process.
what you refer to is a situation whereby one doesnot want to rely on the
internal squid cache proces, and use external DNS lookups, with the
dnsserver, that is when you should use --disable-internal-dns
(http://squid.visolve.com/squid/squid24s1/externals.htm#cache_dns_program)
comparisons between the internal and external dns clients, from the squid
process pov, can be found here
(http://homepages.tesco.net/~J.deBoynePollard/FGA/web-squid-dns-client-options.html)

Beg to differ, slightly. Squid caches dns lookups by
default.
Not really. The internal Squid caching application is
handled by a program known as 'dnsserver'. This
option/program is only made available if you enabled
'--disable-internal-dns' during Squid compile time.
