And mostly on Linux... last time I checked (a while back) 
'nscd' wasn't native to FreeBSD, but things could have 
changed now.

No, not really. 'nscd' is just meant to accelerate host 
name lookups - you may consider it a suppliment cache to 
BIND. However, in most cases, 'nscd's' DNS cache is 
independent of BIND's, so if you need to quickly flush 
old records so new ones can take effect, restarting 
'nscd' is advised.
