I always thought that the cable was being run from SA up the coast to the
middle east and then out to india. I guess I was wrong. I am going through
that right now with my internet connection. I just switched to Verizon Home
service and they run Fiber right to my house. It is terminated at a box
right next to my electricity and water. They use the existing cables wiring
to send the signal around the house.

Their main issue with running the fiber network it that they don't want to
be forced by the government to sell their bandwidth to smaller companies in
order to create a fake market. The big cable company Comcast was forced to
sell space on their cable network and all the incumbent telcos Verizon
included has been forced to sell space on their phone networks.

I can see their point. If I spent billions of dollars to build a fiber
network why should i be forced to sell space on it to competitors? If tax
dollars are used i can see the argument but not when I fund it myself.
