Interestingly enough, ever since at least Windows 95 we (they) have been
able to select "Print to file" in the printer dialog, and this would
generate a PostScript file. I have absolutely no idea why this feature
never received any attention, especially since PDF is essentially
compressed PS with some bells and whistles.

This does not count in Windows's favour, by the way. They never advertised
this feature, and for all I know it may have been left in there by some
cheeky programmer for fellow geeks to find. PostScript also never had its
file type associated with anything meaningful, and while Linux users open
PostScript files with the same ease as they open PDF files, most Windows
users don't even know what PostScript is, except for the odd
self-proclaimed expert who feels certain it's got something to do with
printers.
