He CURRENTLY works for Microsoft thus is using recent version of Office (2013)
which I do.Still, when sending CVs and business proposals, I use a nifty
feature that has been on Word since Word 2007
that allows me to save to pdf.    From: [email protected]

Subject: Re: [LUG] Engineer in the Diaspora wants to return home  Thank you, I
didn't even consider the Office 2003 issue. That makes it doubly senseless, and
it also shows how important it is to use a portable document format. Such as,
oh, I don't know... Portable Document Format? :)

It is marginally more understandable if you are applying for a job not
pertaining to computers at all, even though I do feel that everything worth
doing is worth doing well---that is, if you've found your way to a computer to
write a CV you should go all the way to make sure you not making any mistakes.
But when applying for an IT job? Were I the manager at a workplace with such a
person present, I wouldn't allow that person to touch a keyboard in my
presence. Where there is one flaw of judgement there are quite often more to
come.

Note that I am not commenting on this particular CV in general. I haven't even
read it yet, and for all I know he made an honest mistake and didn't mean to
send it in DOCX. I will give him the benefit of the doubt. On 23 January 2013

using office 2003 and can't read docx.

Thats a shame. I liken that to disqualifying an applicant based on his/her
accent, skin color or culture. In the states all job search websites expect
uploads in .doc format so naturally majority of job seekers have resume in
.doc format. It has nothing to do with actual computer skills. Even my
resume is in .doc format and that didn't prevent me from getting the
position I currently have.

I'd disqualify any applicant from any serious IT assignments if he or she
submitted a curriculum vitæ in the DOCX format. Much more so if it was
written in LibreOffice but actually exported to the bloody format.

CVs are documents intended for viewing only on the recipient end; ergo, PDF
is the appropriate format, unless otherwise stated of course.
