Sorry for the delayed response. I was busy and distracted and thought this was something I couldn't contribute anything useful to without actually testing git master.
(I'm on Lubuntu 12.04 and don't have time to upgrade or set up a build environment right now) For "View > Save for This Folder", I'm a bit concerned that users may not always realize that it means "Save View for This Folder". It's not exactly common to make the menu name an implicit but integral part of the menu item's name. Beginning the option name with an ellipsis would fix that but it's too ugly to contemplate when there are better options available. I didn't sleep well, so I'm having trouble thinking of a better phrasing, but considering "Save View for This Folder" reveals that there are two problems with the original: 1. "Save for this folder"? Save WHAT? Am I turning off the ability for applications to save things here? Is it a grammatically-flawed attempt to provide an analogue to "Show Hidden" for save files? 2. What does it mean to "Save the view for this folder"? I'm having trouble thinking of more compact ways to write the whole item name but "Remember" would be a better word to use than "Save". - While you are technically saving the settings, "Save" has become associated with documents and/or explicit user action and you don't want to muddy the waters. - "Remember" is the verb that has become associated with preserving non-document things (passwords, settings, etc.) which wouldn't normally be preserved. That just leaves finding a clearer, more compact way to say "the view for this folder" and that's where I'm having trouble. So far, the most compact things I've come up with which are still somewhat clear are "Remember Folder View Mode" or "Remember View Mode Here" ...neither of which are ideal. As for the dialog headers, I have mixed comments: 1. I do agree that the GNOME string is more clear than the libfm one. The libfm one states a fact and lets the user infer further action from context while the GNOME one gives an explicit instruction. 2. I think the GNOME string doesn't go far enough and would be better if it said "Select an application to open 'NAME' files" rather than "Select and application for 'NAME' files". When using "application for" rather than "application to open", it takes extra thought to parse since its meaning must be disambiguated by looking at what follows. Also, while "select an application for" is valid English, it's the kind of phrasing that only feels natural in conversational contexts where not much thought is given to the phrasing so long as the listener understands what was said. I'm too busy to upgrade off Lubuntu 12.04 or set up my own build environment right now so I can't comment on the libfm tooltip or footer unless you provide a screenshot. Likewise with the dual-pane mode... which is a shame because that's one of the few things about Dolphin that I've always wanted to see in other file managers. (Konqueror's is too awkward when you just want to briefly switch to dual-pane to do some drag-and-drop file-sorting and then go back to normal.) On 13-11-23 10:40 AM, Andrej N.
