Credit where it's due: Angus Leeming and Ronald Florence did the real
work with a shell script. I just wrote the (horrid, embarrassing, ...)
AppleScript wrapper around it to create a GUI and allow for user
interaction.

The script also installs LyX specific TeX files in an appropriate
local directory. It could do other things like automatically update
template files from old to new formats.

I'm attaching a version of it here in case you want to look. It should
be understandable (aside from the convoluted logic of it) even without
knowing anything about AppleScript.
