This was my question some time ago, now I found the solution and I just want
to report in case anybody got the same problem...
The problem occurs using kdvi as previewer after deinstalling xdvi,
particulary the tetex-xdvi package on RedHat based systems. kdvi is missing
the file /usr/lib/texmf/texmf/xdvi/XDvi .
Reinstalling tetex-xdvi makes the problem go away.
If you don't use RedHat, kdvi or even teTeX, please ignore this message and
excuse me.
