I have a lot of trouble with kdvi, too. The diagnostics for every
font are:

kpathsea: Running MakeTeXPK cmr10 600 600 1+0/600 ljfour
sh: MakeTeXPK: not found
pclose(MakeTeXPK): No child processes
kpathsea: Probably this is the pclose bug in
kpathsea: some versions of Linux; continuing.
xdvi: Can't find font cmr10.
Character(s) will be left blank.

usual xdvi runs OK. I didn't find any file XDvi on my installation??

Yours,
Michael
