Maybe it's the MetaFont mode: Check XDvi*mfmode in
/usr/lib/texmf/texmf/xdvi/XDvi, it should be the same as in
"Options->Font->MetaFont Mode" in kdvi. Mine is "ljfour".
I got a typo there, corrected it and it runs fine now.
