You've got a problem with your TeX-Installation. When using RedHat, make sure
you installed the tetex and the tetex-xdvi package. Can't speak for other
distributions.

When using teTeX, this usually resides in /usr/lib/texmf/texmf/xdvi/XDvi and
containes something like this:

XDvi*mfmode: ljfour
XDvi*pixelsPerInch: 600
XDvi*shrinkFactor: 8
XDvi*paper: a4
