I see exactly the same problem, except I think the suggestion solution 
is wrong.

I did *not* deinstall xdvi.  I have /usr/lib/texmf/texmf/xdvi/XDvi.
There is some other reason that kdvi is not looking in the correct
place for the fonts.

I also have xdvi, and xdvi is working correctly.
