Sure. But you lose one of the most important features of TeXLive: immediate update to the most recent packages from CTAN. I cannot judge *buntu or Debian, but openSuse does not update the TeXLive package often enough for my needs, so I'd always recommend to abandon the distro version and go for the upstream TeXLive version.
