Italian, not Spanish, the one I was analyzing Vittore,
I hope entirely unmitigated was your enjoyment.
I love theory of translation around poetry.
More liberties taken less liberties taken
original language version on facing pages
or btween each line or absent. Comparison
of the same poem translated by different people.
On another list within a longer message
I fused in line by line the original language
of a poem I'd found in a Guenrica Editions publication
"Counterpanes" by Gaston Miron, translated by Dennis Egan.
For extracontinentals, perhaps unaware, Miron's definitely
one of those in consideration as greatest poet
to live and write in Canada. Spectacular and original.
Another note: on the list, it triggered discussion of translation.
Did you know that translators are often paid next to nothing
and receive almost no credit? And yet they multiply
accessible poetry (and other writing) by a factor of hundreds?
Again, (as the publisher seemed pleased the previous time,
I'm offering this forth to the world - 147 members on ma-network now! )
that people will discover Miron if they haven't already
and think a kind thought toward "free translations" =

Demain, l'Histoire / Tomorrow, History Miron / Egan

" " " " "" """ " "" """ " """ """

"Sad as I they no longer make
Triste pareil a moi il ne s'en fait plus
I look at these people who are about to die
je regarde ce peuple qui va bientot mourir
sad as it is no longer possible
triste ainsi qu'il n'est plus possible
to be so
de l'etre autant

nobody here dies a natural death
personne ici ne meurt de sa belle mort
there is a little of all of us in each one that goes
c'est un peu de nous tous en celui qui s'en va
and in each that is born a little of all of us
et c'est en celui qui nait un peu de nous tous
that becomes another
qui devient autre

you as well you will one day be sad Humanity
toi aussi tu seras triste un jour Humanite
certain centuries will ache in your bones
mal tu auras dans les os certains siecles
a phantom ache in the historical void
le mal fantome dans la vacance historique
of origin
de l'origine

Men
Hommes
History may cease to exist
l'Histoire ne sera peut-etre plus
retain the names of genocide
retenez les noms des genocides
so that in your time they will not be yours
pour qu'en votre temps vous n'ayez pas les votres
men
hommes
we must kill the death that swoops down on us
il faut tuer la mort qui sur nous s'abat
and this calls for the insurrection of poetry
et ceci appelle l'insurrection de la poesie"

Dennis Egan translating Gaston Miron

I'd love to retype more of the poems in this book,
but you know where you can find it, on the Guernica table
at fairs or on the book table at Guernica launches,
and probably at 123 Ossington and other bookstores,
that's COUNTERPANES, by Gaston Miron, translated
by Dennis Egan.

My only affiliation with all of above friendship in the
love of poetry.

Cheers, ~ John Barlow
