Hi ya'll, just wanted to relay my first experiences with iChat AV.

I wanted to get some form of voice chat/VOIP/SIP application working on two
laptops (my partner (she has a Lombard/333 128 MB/4 GB) is moving to the UK
in Aug and I won't be joining her for at least 2 moths so I wanted to see if
we could get voice over TCP/IP working before she left).

Anyway, I couldn't find any voice chat/audio conferencing software that
would work between OS 9 and X or even between OS 9 and OS 9. It seems like
Mac really is a back water in that regard (how long has Windows had it as an
option through MSN or AIM? Four years?) :(. (plus, Cu-SeeMe, the old standby
no longer seems to be available for Mac).

I installed OS X 10.2.6 on her Lombard/333 and experimented by dialling in
to an ISP at 33.6 and connecting to my Pismo/400 on ADSL using iChat AV. It
worked like a charm. The audio was clear and latency was low, *even* over
the 33.6 connection (when I used iChat AV with a Rendezvous-mediated
connection over 802.11b between the computers from the back yard it was as
clear as a half-decent speaker phone)!

I guess this may just work to keep us in touch at low (no ;) cost,
especially if she gets access to a LAN quickly (though, 128 MB just isn't
enough to run OS X properly... however, I was *impressed* by how well the
Lombard/333 handled OS X 10.2.6. If I was forced to use the Lombard/333 I
would still run OS X on that puppy (but upgrade the RAM)... it's more than
fast enough (though, don't try to load complex web pages or else you'll find
that the web browser (Safari in this case) will rely on virtual memory and
come to a screeching halt in 128 MB RAM).

Eric.
