Thanks for the heads up on PatchBurn and it didn't help. I couldn't get it
to recognise the drive when using the Firewire cable (System Profiler could
see the drive) so went to USB 1.1 so it could load a driver. A restart and
I was back at no Firewire burner. I was able to hook up a Firewire external
hard drive and there's no problem with either port, or either cord.
As great as PatchBurn is it's only function is to enable direct
burning from the OS X iApps.
When the burner is hooked up via Firewire, it just keeps hunting for
something. It won't stop unless I power it down.
Have you tried killing all power to the Pioneer DVR-110DBK, leave it
off for a few minutes, then power it up, and then attach the FW cable.
Toast 7 is G4 only. I tried to fake it but no luck. Will try upgrading from
Toast 6.0.5 to 6.1.1 to see if that helps.
You might just want to go to v. 6.0.7 or 6.0.9 instead, depending on
your "music requirements". ;)
From Roxio's update info page for 6.1: [quote]
"Following discussions with Apple, this version will no longer allow
customers to create audio CDs, audio DVDs, or export audio to their
hard drive using purchased iTunes music store content." [end quote]
What "generic" brand is the enclosure and do you know what Firewire
bridge chipset it's using? The Oxford 911 chipset was very reliable.
It could also be a firmware issue. Unfortunately most need to be
connected to a Windows PC to do the firmware update.
Have a read at

see if any of your problems are similar.
BTW: xlr8yourmac.com is a great source of info and help. Search their
DataBase report for specific help.
MEANWHILE, as the subject line says.... Danged if I wasn't able to burn a
DVD (at 2x) using the USB 1.1 connection! Slow as molasses but it worked.
Leaving me to ponder... how the heck did this happen?!?!?! When I was
contemplating adding an external to the iMac 350mHz, everyone said DVD
wouldn't work on USB 1.1. (And I was pestering everyone!) Before I give
the iMac 350mHz away to the kid down the street, I'm going to load a copy
of Toast to see if I can burn on that one too. The results might help out
someone who isn't able to upgrade even the small step that I did.
Will continue to hunt down the Firewire issue as I'd love to have the
speed. Thanks everyone for feedback.

The version of Toast may be important. The current version is 7.01.
Versions prior to 6 may not support the DVR-110D. I think you need
patchburn on the iMac G3, even with a10.3.9 installed.
