Yup, I had the correct updated version for 10.3.9.

That's what is happening with the drive in Firewire... it blinks with some
attempts at loading something (even when there's no disc in the drive.)

I am already thinking of upgrading to Tiger. I'm not certain this is a
bootable DVD drive which I'd need since there's no internal. Barring a
bootable DVD drive, I'll have to track down the Tiger CDs.

Yup, there's one there!

Bad news on the USB 1.1 front. That first DVD burned had a bit over 2.4 GB
of files. This second DVD I'm trying has 4.2 GB of files. It's been burning
for the 7 hours 45 minutes, stuck at 00:03 for the past +5 hours per Toast
6.1.1. I can feel the drive vibrating so it's doing something but if it
doesn't finish by morning, I'm going to assume there's a problem :-(

Neighbour with XP has agreed to reinstall the burner internally in his
machine so the firmware can be updated from 1.07 to 1.17 (.exe file and I
don't have VPC) The firmware update release notes give only media updates
versus hardware changes but if there's a chance...

I'm trying to track down anyone in town with Firewire, Mac or XP so I can
see if any other machine can burn via Firewire or even consistently mount a
DVD via Firewire. No luck as can be expected in a small town.

Shoulda paid $24 more for the LG drive that was guaranteed to work with Mac :-(
