Oops! I didn't make myself clear--as usual. This _was_ with a modem cable; two in 
fact, one bought from ScotSys in Glasgow (Lindy), and one off the back of my US 
Robotics 33.6 thingey. Both cables work fine here with my sensible 7200 and external 
modem! Both go "brrrbbrbrbbrbbrbrbrb" with the 6500.

I suppose I could just tell him that his modem is hosed, and get him to buy a proper 
modem that way...
