I seem to recall that there was a similar problem to this (soft start not working, but fine with a hard start) with some of the systems from this vintage which occurred when fitted with certain hard drives. Have you by any chance fitted a replacement drive at any time?
Also, have you tried replacing the battery to cure the time/date problem?
