I had to wipe and install after upgrading an 8500/150 with a G4 upgrade card so you might have to consider that to get things working again
I would also check to see if a firmware upgrade is needed then try an upgrade to OS 9 (I realise the first generation G3's shipped with 8.6 but the upgrade cards might have firmware that is better suited to OS9).

Added memory to my 5400/160 G3 accelerated Mac yesterday without a problem.
Pressed the CUMA button. (About this computer shows the additional memory
and virtual memory has reset automatically to take it into account).
Zapped the PRAM
Now the restart function has stopped working.
Zapped the PRAM Rebuilt the desktop
Still same symptoms.
Select restart Mac shuts down in an orderly manner screens goes black but no
familiar Cmaj7 chord. It just sits there. Turn it off at main. Press
triangle key and you get the 'Boign!' and everything bursts into life as
usual.
Get a message that the time and date needs to be reset. Defaulted to year
56.
This implies that the PRAM battery problem but screen hasn't reset resolution.
