OS X 10.4 is really the only version that suffers from that. 10.3 is much leaner, and as a result faster.

Sorry Mark, but Tiger is definitely faster than Panther on my machines (Lime iMac DV and a Pismo, both 400MHz 512MB)

On the surface Tiger seems faster, stuff like window drawing and general system functions are marginally faster, but as soon as I started piling on the apps all that extra eye candy stuff in 10.4 was eating precious RAM and CPU cycles. I suppose it depends what you do, I use my B&W for heavy CPU stuff because it has a larger CPU cache (1MB L2 versus 256k in the iMac) and a faster hard disk. The iMac (running Tiger with Dashboard disabled) is newer and faster but has a 15" screen so it's useless for anything that requires big real- estate. Swings and roundabouts I guess. I do have a G3/500 iBook running 10.4.3 and it seems happy enough, I'm surprised how fast it actually runs considering it has a Rage128 graphics chip and only 256MB RAM.

I also find generally Tiger tends to do more pageouts ( writes from RAM to the swap space on the hard disk) on the iMac. I never used to get any with 10.3.x in over a month of continuous operations, so Tiger is using more RAM somewhere.

Just my 2p worth.

That said let's worry about getting our man on Panther

What's the current going price? I have a copy here up for grabs

£30-40.
