Different solutions suit different people - some are prepared
to give up freedoms. Not me, I'm happily running GNU/Linux on
my Macs :-)

I wouldn't bother with Yellow Dog, good though it is, unless
you decide that a Debian-based distribution of GNU/Linux
/really/ isn't for you .

Why? Well, once you have installed Debian you never need to
re-install again. You can update your system daily to either
``testing'' or ``unstable'' (don't worry - it rarely lives up
to its name) snapshots - or you can run the stable distribution,
with automatic security updates, then let it upgrade every
year or so to the latest stable release.
The Advanced Package Tool (APT) ensures that all dependencies
are taken care of during software installation, and there
are over 15,000 packages included.

Ubuntu is based on Debian's distribution of GNU, with a few
differences of organisation that appeal to some (well, to many
-it's very popular), but not to me. The great thing about the
GNU operating system, and other Free Software, is the freedom
to install and run what you like - and to change it to suit
your business (or home use), not to change your business to
fit the software you just bought (or rented, not bought, according
to the EULA you clicked through).

Ubuntu has v good online support, as does Debian.
Another alternative with good support is Gentoo, but it's really
for those with strong technical interests.

Why not put MacOS on the new hard disk you mentioned, and GNU
on the old one, and see how it compares to MacOS-X even under
the handicap of running from a slower disk.
