Kelly; I didn't know what a codec is, either.... so I just put it into Google and found a definition. It is short for compressor/decompressor. A codec is any technology for compressing and decompressing data. Beyond that, I'm no help; I've never even tried to watch a movie on my iMac OSX10.2.2. And I've never even had or really used a computer until March of this year... I'm a novice and still trying to figure out simple stuff.
