As a totally unresearched opinion, I suspect that Time/Warner has some funky
stuff which requires certain modems. I say this only because my mom was going
to buy a modem instead of renting, and was given a very short list of those
modems which were compatible with Time/Warner's service. Of course, a search on
the Internet might help...and having done this, Business Insider claims that
buying a modem is like investing in a house [1], and says that there are 5
compatible modems in NYC, whereas salon.com says that almost all modems are
compatible. Arg.

[1] Hmmm... I wonder what I would get for a 20-year old modem. It's more like a
purchase, not an investment.
