There's a $30 piece of shareware called ScreenRecycler:

I tried out the demo, but found it too slow for a 2003 vintage PowerBook on my 
home router.  Perhaps your iMac would have better results.  If you have an 
extra ethernet connection on you regular Mac, a cross-over cable might provide 
better performance.

While it uses VNC under the covers, the nice thing about ScreenRecycler is that 
it really looks like a monitor to the regular machine.  You can either mirror 
the displays or have multi-displays.
