Not sure, if this helps, but i had as well a problem compiling libsdl2
on 10.11.6, which "disappeared" after installing XQuartz (i think, i had
XFree86 before)
sudo port install xorg-server
sudo port clean libsdl2
sudo port upgrade outdated
Maybe there is a missing dependency in libsdl2.
