Hey Tim, yes fair enough. I should be pulled up on that phraseology. I think
the majority of screen readers use the "to the right of cursor" method, which
has made it something of a convention. But then, the majority of screen readers
are for Windows, and there's no reason at all why the Mac shouldn't have its
own conventions, as indeed it does, such as interacting, and other behaviours.

So yes, standard wasn't the correct word in this case.

I'm changing back and forth between OS X and Windows on my virtual machine many
times a day, so for me I can save what little sanity I have left by ensuring
that when it comes to cursor movement, both environments work the same.

Good to have the option for sure. Like you, I remember the Apple 2E and working
with the cursor the Apple way.

All the best.

Hi,

Personal preference is the key thing here. Although, I will disagree with the
comment about "standard screen reader practice". Where? Why? The default
behaviour on the Mac with VO of reading text that it passes over is standard
practice on the Mac and has been since scree readers began on Apple devices
back in the 80's. Just because one is used to another method does not make it
"standard". From a visual prospective on a Mac, the cursor is set just after
the letter that is entered, it is a vertical cursor and its behaviour
corresponds with that style of cursor.

Sorry, just had to chime in here.

I completely agree with you. One of the first things I do on a new Mac is
change VoiceOver so text to the right of the cursor is spoken. I would love to
see such an option offered in iOS as well.

Use what works for you. I switch it because speaking what's to the right of the
cursor is standard screen reader practice. It's what I'm used to and I see no
advantage in it being different.

To me, this is absolutely a matter of personal preference. There's no right or
wrong way and props to Apple for offering the choice.

Please, explain why you don't recommend any change with the delete key. I'm new

The delete key deletes to the left of the cursor, and function-delete deletes
to the right. The only difference is in how VoiceOver handles the cursor; it
does so in a more accurate way, as I explained in my last message. I don't
recommend it, but you can disable this if you really want to. Open the
VoiceOver Utility, go to the Verbosity category, choose the Text tab, and set
the cursor behavior to "text to the right of the cursor" instead of "text the
cursor passes".

2. The delete key is a nightmare. When I want to erase some character, I

fn-delete (that is, press the delete key with the fn key held). This deletes
the character to the right of the cursor.

If you select text by using the shift key in combination with cursor movement
keys, then start typing, the selected text is replaced by whatever you type -
that is, the selected text is deleted before the text that you enter is
inserted.

I'm sure this is all explained in OS X tutorials that you can read for further
details.
