You need to copy the skype application to your applications folder. Open the 
disk image, and highlight the skype application, and press command c to copy 
it. Now go to the applications folder and press command v to paste it there. 
Currently, there is no way that I know of to tell the status of a person, but 
there is an easy work around, you can configure skype to only show you the 
contacts that are on line, normally these would be the ones you would be 
interested in.
