Michael's delightful parable underscores the fact that beliefs are
important in maintaining schools of thought. Even the coldest
scientific examinations are motivated by underlying beliefs, though
hopefully flexible ones. Religions have highly inflexible beliefs,
which frequently evoke the most bizarre explanations of their central
mysteries. At least for the present the central mystery of the
Vinland Map seems to be the apparent duality of the ink line, which I
would like to refer to as the Mystery of the Twinity.
