Can someone please remove these Vinland Map mavens from the list. It is
boring in the extreme to have to delete, never mind read, their babble.

Possibly because, having intended to create the ink for the forged map by
recycling paper and parchment from the "Speculum Historiale" as soot and
gelatin, he (or she) found that a further ingredient was needed to achieve
the desired visual appearance, and knew it had to be a pure inorganic
chemical if the carbon-dating trick was to work (but did not know how
remarkable the process for producing pigment anatase actually was).
However, the catch with that scenario is: where does the mystery chemical
permeating the parchment fit in?
