Mats,
You're making the assumption that the person who originally assigned the
positional data to the map objects is always correct. I can think of plenty
of examples of data being delivered to me with positions that were
horrendously and obviously wrong, and this was data provided by surveyors &
others who should know better. In fact, I'm sure that I've screwed up the
odd position here and there myself.
Having said that, you are quite right in noting that many "incorrect"
positions are actually problems with datums, projections, units, etc.
Dragging data to where it should be in this case is asking for disaster. The
trick is obviously to realize which situation you're facing.
I just wish that map data always appeared where it should "without further
ado".
