Try Object>Combining the two regions (they must be in same table).
Also you can draw polygons over any lines and/or holes you want to have
disappear and Combine them with the background. If any bits of polyline
remain, make the table editable (a crucial step for all these operations)
and use the Node Editor Tool to select nodes and delete them until you have
the desired shape.
