I do think the party-state still controls the private sector but am not
enamoured of the term "proletarian dictatorship" to describe the system. Lenin
and the early Marxists,of course, contrasted the workers' state to "bourgeois
dictatorships", but the term is widely misunderstood today. "Socialist market
economy" better conveys the difference with Western capitalism that most
contemporary audiences can understand, and that is how the PRC itself defines
the system. However, as I've noted previously, I'm with Roberts and others who
don't believe China has yet reached that higher stage and that the possibility
remains that the private sector will gain control of the state to restore
capitalism or that the CPC leadership itself will dismantle the SOE's and
redistribute their considerable assets to itself - as the CP leaderships did
throughout the Soviet bloc in the 90's.
