You'll recall that I began our exchange by acknowledging that there was "a Yiddish-speaking community with a common history and culture concentrated in Eastern Europe which corresponded to the modern definition of a nation", as did Marxists and other socialists you refer to above. However, it was subsequently and tragically destroyed in the Holocaust, and its remaining survivors dispersed to other lands where they, and especially successive generations, adopted the language and other elements of the culture of their new communities in the US, Argentina, western Europe, South Africa, the Yishuv in Palestine, and elsewhere. The children and grandchildren of Irish, Italian, Chinese, and other immigrants underwent the same process of assimilation while often retaining a sentimental attachment to the ancestral culture which was inculcated from birth in much the same way as loyalty to the home town sports team was transmitted from generation to generation. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
