In further reply to Marv, here are two pamphlets I wrote. I wrote them first and foremost for my fellow carpenters and other union members who want to understand what is happening in our unions. i wrote "The Coming Crisis in the Carpenters Union <https://oaklandsocialist.com/2026/02/20/pamphlet-the-coming-crisis-in-the-carpenters-union/>" prior to a contract that was coming up in 1980. I wrote What Happened to our unions? <https://oaklandsocialist.com/2013/06/06/what-happened-to-our-unions/> around 2009. It goes more into depth on exactly that subject.
My point in posting these is that it's not enough to just agitate against the union bureaucracy's weak contracts and contract enforcement. Members have to understand where those policies spring from. Even to this day, carpenters who bitterly oppose carpenters union president Doug McCarron still talk about the union's "market share". That term was introduced by McCarron himself and is a business term not a union term. It is the essence of business unionism. But in the end, it's impossible to write material like what I wrote - and distributed to my own members among others - if one is not actually walking the walk and fighting the fight. I made my mistakes along the way, but nobody can say I didn't do my best to fight the fight as best as I knew how.
