Trade union support for the Democrats led a section of the ruling class to support social spending? Nonsense. No significant part of the ruling class likes social spending. They concede some when they judge that the cost of not conceding would be greater, period. Working-class discontent has mattered, but trade union support for the Democratic party has had trivial weight in all this.
"The sharp decline of the unions since the 70’s has been accompanied by an accelerated assault on the welfare state" – both are effects of a contradiction in capitalist accumulation. The insinuation that the union decline opened the way to the rollbacks is a false implication of cause and effect.
