Good question. Of course, a dozen uses of it in one context hardly establishes it as an analytical concept on the order of "mode of production," for example. Marx used the term in The Eighteenth Brumaire and in The Civil War in France. Did he ever use it in application to any other situation than France under Louis Bonaparte?
