Dear list, After some discussion and toughts-sharing with Michelle Ziegmann, and in the spirit of transparency that we want to have in the Community, I've come with this #proposal, that I hope you find useful and enriching for the community and its goals.
Some of you may know that there is an Spanish-speaking community which is starting to grow and became actively engaged in the Matterhorn project (though perhaps no as officially as we would like). We already have our own mail list to which we communicate (in Spanish) important news that are posted in the main mail lists, and we (UVigo's team) also try to provide support to the new Spanish adopters in our own language. But within this time we have seen that sometimes our community have specific areas of interest which may not be so important for the rest of the community. I'm thinking of specific differences in the high-education systems or even social particularities, which make that some key features in the project are less important to us, while some others which are in the bottom of the list for the whole community are very important for our particular needs. Besides, we have seen that the language-barrier is very important in the first contact with Matterhorn, and adopters interest grows more quickly if the first encounter with Matterhorn takes places in their own language (after that, when they have already "taking the bait", they make an effort to keep learning more about the project in English). Finally, and even though most of Spanish-speaking adopters have an acceptable knowledge of English, there are some obscure or tricky aspects of Matterhorn which are difficult to understand and could be better explained in the adopter's mother tongue. Therefore, we (Uvigo's team) are really convinced that having an specific Spanish subsection in the wiki would benefit, not only the Spanish-speaking community, but also the whole community, since it would help those developers who are more reluctant to use a language other than their own to engage more deeply in the community and participate. We also think that this must be a subsection in the official wiki, and not a space of its own, because this may give the impression of being a separate, independent branch, and that's not our intention. Of course, our request is not limited to the Spanish community, and we foresee that other languages may be interested in similar spaces for them. We find this positive and we think that benefits the community, because it puts the stress in the diversity of our Community to better integrate its members, rather than to separate them. I look forward to hearing your responses, criticism and, if any, praise on this #proposal. Best regards Rubén
