Dear R.T.,

First off, Debian is the best Linux distro out there. That being said, the
best one for a newbie (in my humble opinion) is SuSe, especially for an old
Mac person.

It has a lot of wonderful GUI based tools for such tasks as graphical
configuration with SaX2. YaST2 a top-notch graphical installation tool that
does a great job of detecting hardware automatically, as well as, coming in
handy for install/ remove software in the future. It comes with 6 CDs of
software; probably too much for a newbie, but hay its there. It's very easy
to get, even for a PowerPC, at many stores. And comes with a very good 450
page book and 60 days of installation help.

Good Luck,

Tony Cannata
