I think you choices are (in no particular order):
Yellow Dog Linux
Debian
SuSe
Mandrake
LinuxPPC
Yellow Dog Linux just released version 2.0. I would be wary as some people
have had problems with the installer, but YMMV. I would wait for a point
release update before trying YDL 2.0.
Debian is considered by many the distribution for experienced users.
I personally find the package manager un-intuitive, but once you get it, it
has features others don't.
SuSe is known for including everything, even the kitchen sink. I have no
experience with this distro, but it seems overkill for 2 500 MB drives.
Mandrake is known in x86 land for being the most current on hardware
support and software versions. It is brand new to PPC land, and may be
available only as a beta in PPC.
LinuxPPC is one of the first PPC distros. Since moving to a non- profit
organization, announcements have been quiet about a new release. This is
the distro I personally use. I have used RedHat since version 4.2 on x86,
so I like distros that use rpm for a package manager. (Don't throw things
at me for using RH, my first Linux install was Slackware)
48MB of RAM is a bit tight for a X windows installation. 4 out of 5 Linux
machines here do not use X windows, long live CLI. On some distros, the X
windows installer may not have enough memory to complete some tasks unless
you enable swap space early in the install. Check the install documentation
for how to do this.
I would mount one drive as root (/) and one drive as /usr. How do you
expect to use it? What kind of software will you use?
