Not to start a flame war, but Debian has a 'sit on it till it's ready'
mentality so you almost never see a package come out and than a bunch off
patches that roll out afterwards. It is almost a little too conservative,
coming with only free software.
In one experience I had though, after booting up an old PC I hadn't used for
some time Debian wouldn't even let me proceed with using my box until I
updated it with several patches, including the JavaScript exploit in
Netscape and the recent hole found in BIND. Also the package managment is
just the best and will cover your tail for you very well.
