a unix system would likely be more complicated for a new user any way. the older
versions of the apple os are available free for downloading. alternately, you could
post to the swap list asking for a copy of a suitable os, you'll likely get several
offers to send it cheaply or for just postage. there is info on how to do this, with
a pc here: <http://www.jagshouse.com/> along with many other useful tidbits of
information. also, some ideas here: < http://www.edprint.demon.co.uk/se/serial.html>
including how to do a direct serial port transfer from a pc to a mac, if you can't
find the cables let me know, i could easily build you the cable they specify for
cheap, basically just for my parts cost and shipping plus maybe $2 for a total less
than $10, i've got a number of mac cables and pc serial port connectors. just tell me
if you need a db9 or db25 connector for the pc end. also see this: <
http://macfaq.org/software/macos.shtml#Q1.1.6>. probably best to try and make a boot
disk, you'll need one eventually any way. contact me off list for more free help and
possible sources for older software.

"Promise me, promise me this day, promise me now..." he asked. "Even as they strike
you down, you will remember: humanity is not our enemy. The only thing worthy of you
is compassion...Hatred will never let you face the beast in human beings. One day,
when you face the beast alone, with your courage intact, your eyes kind...out of your
smile will bloom a flower. and...on the long, rough road, the sun and the moon will
continue to shine." Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk
