The Getty creates quarterly reports on web activity, based not on 'hits' or some other measure of server activity but on visits and visitors. "Visitors" or users are unique IP addresses that are counted only once each quarter regardless of the number of times that each IP address visits the site. "Visits" ignore the unique IP requirement and are thus most comparable to the notion of counting the number of people visiting the museum or library. We recognize that we are not measuring the value of the web site but merely counting (with the exception of those relying on AOL for internet service) very much like similar measurements of exhibition attendance.
All quarterly reports since the third quarter of FY01 - along with other usability studies - are available at http://www.getty.edu/about/institutional_research .
