| For example, a DVD with the THX logo might still be a non-anamorphic
| transfer,

Which has nothing to do with THX. THX is a specification for audio
quality, not video quality.

| If you mean Dolby Digital, this isn't entirely true. Dolby Pro-Logic is
| what you're describing. That has left, right and rear channels
| only, AFAIK.

Dolby Surround is left, right, rear. Dolby 3-Channel Logic is left, right,
center. Dolby ProLogic is left, right, center, rear. All include super
subwoofer capability.

| Dolby Digital is a different format to Pro-Logic.

Dolby Digital ~= Dolby AC3. Aside from the digital encoding, the one thing
that Dolby Digital has over ProLogic is stereo rear channel.

| Both Dolby Digital and, like DTS, features fully discrete 5.1 channel
| sound: left, right, centre, rear-left, rear-right, and low frequency
| effects (the .1),

No, Dolby Digital and dts have up to 5.1 channels. I have DVD-Videos,
Dolby Digital, with only two channels, left and right (Terminator and
*shudder* Zeram :). There are even monaural (center only) discs out there
(I don't have any of those).

| which is sometimes called the subwoofer channel, but that is slightly
| incorrect. (Although the way the LFE channel is usually used, it might as
| well be true.)

Because it is not really a channel. It is what you get when you run a
second set of leads out of the left and right satellites and merge them in
a crossover (left+right, right+left). The .1 "channel" just makes it
easier to cable, a single coaxial lead instead of two whatevers.

Me, I have two subs, a "mid-sub" and a super sub. The super sub is on the
.1, the mid-sub is on a conventional crossover.

| I think DTS stands for Digital Theatre Sound,

Yes, but their trademark logo is lowercase: dts.
