Mate, doesn't it suck the things that PO's do to their cars. Why the hell would
you do that. I don't think you would have any problem re-tapping the tread as
long as it only needs say 50% of the original thread depth done. The diameter of
the bar is determined on the load rating and relationship to the strut diameter
as the top mounting doesn't take that much of a pounding during average road
use. Pete L & others may have some views or personal experience with this
problem. I've seen them re-threaded before on dirt racers as the Gabriels used
to come loose before the nylon threaded nuts came on the scene. Our guys used to
Locktite the buggas and wasn't that a fun job to get off when a bent strut came
in.
