Michael,
I take it the R180 you bought requires the slide in half shafts such as that
on a C210 Skyline. If so you can pick these up for $30-$40 a pair from the
wreckers & pick-a-parts (cheaper usually). They are supposed to be stronger
than the 510 shafts (hearsay). If you go near a transmission shop with your
diff you're going to pay heaps for them to even look at the problem unless
you know a datto friendly, i'd estimate it will cost you $100+ to change
over the side axles and then they'll say your unis are stuffed.
On destroying R160s imo you have to be trying a bit to break them although
most are getting old these days so they have been around a few times, i
wouldn't be too concerned and i reckon you've made a wise purchase; 3.9:1 is
a sweet ratio in an L series /5 speed as you'll find out once your up and
running.
regards,
Terry
